Our Mission
To establish the Wyargine Aquatic Reserve (WAR) for the benefit of public enjoyment and for the purposes of conservation, sustainability, and scientific research in the Sydney Harbour marine environment.
Public Benefits
It is a key objective of the WAF to benefit the members of the public enjoying a wide range of recreational activities, including boating, diving, fishing, paddling, snorkelling and swimming in and outside the designated area.
Environmental Benefits
The aquatic reserve will support the abundance, growth and biodiversity of animals and vegetation in the designated and surrounding areas.
Sustainable Resource Management
Allowing populations to recover and replenish through the creation of a designated no-take, no anchoring zones will directly benefit the local recreational fishing community through fostering a source of more abundant, diverse and larger fish and other sea-life accessible outside the designated zones.
Scientific Research and Education
The establishment of new aquatic reserve areas in the Sydney Harbour are very rare, and this project offers a unique controlled environment for undertaking contemporary research into how marine ecosystems respond to changes in fishing and boating practices.
The project should also lead to enhanced public awareness and education about the importance of aquatic ecosystems.
Wyargine Aquatic Friends (WAF): Who are we?
WAF is a group of volunteers committed to the establishment of the Wyargine Aquatic Reserve. At our core is a community of people, schools and local businesses passionate about the preservation of our local environment.
Our efforts are endorsed and supported by a range of organizations with a presence and operations in the vicinity of the designated area, or with an aligned mandate for research, education and the environment.
